Gum Grafting

Your dentist may refer you for thin or receding gums. The major cause of recession is the over use of a toothbrush and toothpaste. Recession alone does not always need grafting. If there is enough tough or keratinized tissue, correcting causes may be enough. In areas of very thin gums, free gingival grafts may be placed to create a zone of very strong gum tissue. In areas of aesthetic concern, connective tissue grafts may achieve partial or total root coverage. The donor site for both types of grafts is the palate, which is the toughest tissue in the mouth. A retainer type of appliance is worn to protect the palate and for comfort for the first dew day. Grafting is very successful and the grafts usually get stronger with time.
